Robert Iger: My new mentor
The Ride of a Lifetime:
In my attempt to find the motivation to study again for CP1 ( Actuarial Practices), i started reading this autobiography of Robert Iger, the CEO of Walt Disney Company, and now my mentor. Through this book, he narrated me his journey to become one of the most celebrated CEOs of our era, which i want to share with you in a series of posts.
Lesson one- "It is easy to be Optimistic when people say you are great. It is much more difficult and necessary when your sense of yourself is on line."
All my life, I had been praised for being a jack of all traits, scoring decent marks, taking leadership roles wherever opportunity presented and being outspoken about my thoughts. Things changed quickly as i started my professional life, working for an organisation like Milliman, being surrounded by intellectual Actuaries, i could feel the need to perform. And for us our exams are always around to act a catalyst. My first exam while working - CP1 the most lengthy paper of all, and i didn't clear it. While have been lucky to have great support from friends and family,I could evidently feel drop of enthusiasm towards the profession. Maybe because i started doubting myself.
Now when i read lesson one, i try to see the light at the end of the tunnel and not be distracted by the speed bumps.
